Lessons from Jumla to Jhapa: What Young Innovators Taught Us

Highlights from our regional iLab hubs and the student-led solutions that emerged.

Nepal is a country of enormous contrasts. A school in the mountains of Jumla and a school on the plains of Jhapa can feel like different worlds: different weather, different livelihoods, different daily challenges. Working with iLab hubs across regions teaches a simple but powerful lesson: curiosity looks remarkably similar everywhere.

What changes from place to place is not whether students can innovate. It is what they choose to innovate about.

The best problems are close to home

When students are invited to find a problem worth solving, they rarely start with something abstract. They start with what they see on the way to school, at home or in their community. Questions about water, waste, farming, weather, safety and getting from one place to another come up again and again.

Because these problems are personal, students care about solving them. That care is what keeps a team going when the first prototype doesn’t work.

Students don’t need to be taught to care about their community. They need to be shown that they can do something about it.

Why? comes before What if?

The strongest projects are rarely the ones that jump straight to a solution. They are the ones where students spend time understanding the problem first: talking to people affected by it, observing when and where it happens and asking why it keeps happening.

Only after that do they begin to imagine: What if we changed this? What if we tried that? Solutions designed this way tend to be simpler, cheaper and far more likely to actually be used.

Limited resources spark creativity

Schools far from city markets often can’t buy specialised parts. Instead, students learn to prototype with whatever is available: bamboo, cardboard, clay, recycled plastic, old electronics. This constraint is not a weakness. It produces solutions that are practical for the places they are designed for.

Teachers grow alongside students

Teachers often say the hardest part of an iLab is not the technology. It is stepping back and letting students struggle productively. When they do, they frequently discover abilities in students who seemed quiet or disengaged in a regular lesson.

What young innovators taught us

  • Every region has its own problems, and its own young people ready to solve them.
  • Understanding a problem deeply matters more than having the most advanced tools.
  • Confidence grows fastest when students see their ideas work in the real world.
  • Students become more hopeful about their future when they see they can create change where they live.

From Jumla to Jhapa, the message is the same. Young people across Nepal don’t just have ideas. With the right space, support and encouragement, they can turn those ideas into solutions that matter.
