Rethinking Classrooms: From Board Copies to Bridge Building
Simple shifts educators can make to transform traditional classrooms into active learning spaces.

For many students, a typical lesson looks the same: the teacher writes on the board, students copy it into notebooks, and learning is measured by how accurately it can be repeated later. It is orderly and familiar. It is also a lesson where students mostly watch.
Active learning doesn’t require a new building, expensive equipment or throwing out the syllabus. It starts with small, practical shifts in how a lesson is designed.
1. Start with a challenge, not a definition
Instead of opening with “A beam is a structural element that…”, open with a problem: “Using 20 sheets of paper and some tape, build a bridge that can hold a bottle of water between two desks.” The definition becomes far more meaningful once students have felt a paper beam bend under weight.
2. Let students talk to each other
Learning speeds up when students explain ideas to one another. Short pair discussions, small-group builds and quick “turn and tell your partner” moments give every student a chance to think out loud, not just the few who raise their hands.
3. Use what is already in the room
Cardboard, bottle caps, string, old newspapers and plastic bottles are all learning materials. A classroom that collects everyday materials can run hands-on activities every week at almost no cost.
4. Make the teacher a guide
When students are building, the most helpful thing a teacher can do is often to ask a question rather than give an answer: “What do you notice?”, “What could you try?”, “Why do you think that happened?” These questions keep the thinking with the students.
5. Connect it back to the syllabus
Hands-on activities work best when they are clearly linked to what students need to learn. After the bridge challenge, the lesson on forces, materials and structures has something real to point back to. The board still has a place. It just comes after the experience instead of replacing it.

None of these shifts has to happen all at once. Try one change in one lesson, notice what happens, and build from there, which is, after all, exactly what we hope students will learn to do.
