What Is Design Thinking? A Simple Guide for Classrooms
A practical, step-by-step way to help students move from noticing a problem to testing a solution.

Design thinking is a way of solving problems that starts with people rather than with answers. It gives students a clear process to follow when a challenge feels too big to know where to begin.
The five stages
- Understand: who has this problem, and what is it really like for them?
- Define: describe the problem clearly in one sentence.
- Imagine: come up with as many ideas as possible without judging them.
- Build: turn the most promising idea into a quick, rough prototype.
- Test: try it with real people, notice what works, and improve it.
The stages are not a straight line. Testing often sends students back to understanding the problem better, and that is exactly how it should work.

Running it in a single class period
Design thinking can fill a whole term, but it can also fit in one lesson. Give students ten minutes to interview a partner about a small daily frustration, five minutes to define it, ten minutes to sketch ideas, fifteen minutes to build a paper prototype and the rest of the period to share and get feedback.
The goal isn’t a perfect product. It is for students to experience, even briefly, what it feels like to notice a problem, care about the people it affects and try to make things better.
